Preventing Air Pollution and Diseases There From

Air pollution does not only has direct grave health affects on humanity though breathing but also it sickens and kills plants and animals and thus has indirect adverse impacts also on human life. For preventing and elimination of air pollution, individuals and organizations concerned with environmental protection recommend the following four direct factors of degrading our environment making a bitter world we live in.

  1. Coal-fired Boilers : Coal-fired boilers mostly used in thermal power plants are the largest contributors of solid particles, green-house gases and toxic substances in the atmosphere. These are accountable to cases of asthma and heart problems leading to premature deaths. Emissions from these boilers need to be closely regulated until we find a better substitutes for generating electricity. Another solution lies in reducing electricity consumption in our houses that will curtail electricity generation and hence the pollution from boilers.
  2. Ocean-going Vessels :  Cruise ships, container ships and tankers emit large amounts of nitrous oxide, sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and solid particles including black soot in to the atmosphere. These are highly responsible green-house effect and smog formation in the atmosphere. Population's dependence on locally produced goods will curtail need of transportation of goods from one country to another thus curtailing need of container ships and hence reducing pollution.
  3. Smoking Bidi/Cigarette/Tobacco : As far as our homes are concerned, people's habits of smoking bidi, cigarette, tobacco are the greatest pollutants not only the bodies of the smokers but also the air non-smokers breathe in. In America alone, nearly 4 lac persons die from tobacco-caused diseases, out of these nearly 50,000 are non-smokers exposed to tobacco smoke in atmosphere. Putting a total ban on production and distribution of tobacco and its products will go a long way in making or world healthier and happier.
  4. Firewood burning : In many backward countries, including rural India, most common fuels used for cooking food are firewood and cow-dung cakes. Both of these emit a lot of smoke, carbon dioxide and other gases polluting atmospheres in the houses people live in, and thus causing sicknesses of respiratory system and that of vision. Use of natural or LP gas for cooking is a better solution.
Thus, with some small adjustments in our lifestyles - individually, socially and economically, we can achieve a lot on this front.
